The Bunch Continue with the Chicken Saga

Well, we did it the chickens moved outside to their coop. At only three weeks they were a little young, but since it stays about 80 for the low at night, they should be fine. Unfortunately, about 3 days after moving them outside we had a huge storm blow through.  And I mean it blew, about 50 mph winds, and rained about 3 inches in one hour. Good news was the tarp we put on top to provide shade from the sun stayed put, but filled up with about a million pounds of water. The chickens, who had taken to laying on the ground in a sleep pile, are apparently inherently stupid and even as the water rose around them putting them neck high in water,  decided to stay put so D and I had to brave the storm and literally wade through ankle high water out to the coop to rescue them. We brought them inside for the rest of that night so we could put the heat light on them until the dried out, but now two things have happened, 1.) we replaced the tarp with a metal roof and 2.) I have to go put the chick

The Bunch do VBS

This was our first VBS experience at our new church in Denton. The youngest two were able to attend and the rest of us volunteered. D was a 5th grade group leader for 3 days until he had to return to work. A and I were in elementary crafts and had 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades. It was chaotic, but fun. This was A's first time volunteering and she said she has never been so tired! She did great though and was a HUGE help.  Kids showing me the moves to their VBS songs A's volleyball team played fantastically last week and won all 3 sets in both games. The playoffs are this weekend so hopefully the do just as well. She has had a wonderful time playing and it is great to see her come out of her shell a little. D and I have been busy building the chicken coop outside. The cute, quiet, and non smelly stage of the chicks has passed. I now have a tub full of squawking, stinky, and trying to fly out birds, though I did solve the flying issue by placing a baby gate over the

The Bunch Start the Farm!

Well, it is official. We own farm animals, though to be fair many cities allow these farm animals. They are "in". What did we get? 10 Chickens! They are so cute and fluffy and the kids absolutely adore them. L literally spent about 6 hours in a row just watching them. As of now, they are in a horse trough in my kitchen. In about 3-4 more weeks, they can move outside to the coop. Thankfully, they are less smelly and quieter than I anticipated. My father in law swears he knows a fool proof method for finding hens vs roosters. In theory, he should have picked 10 hens out for us...though I am pretty sure at least 2 are roosters. Time will tell how accurate his method is. He might be getting a kennel of roosters in a couple of weeks! Finished Coop The kids helped seal the coop....about 6 hours before it poured. So cute! Have no idea what kind they are. Yep....10 chicks. This was the first year that we have celebrated  4th of July in an area
