Ft. Davis hike to the top of the mountain. |

The ride in the car, about 9 hours, was long, but the kids did really well. We listened to books on tape and watched a movie. God bless Red Box! When we first arrived at Fort Davis it had just snowed that morning and it was really cold! We froze that first night even with the heater on full blast! We were also about half a mile from the bathroom, which meant I had to take 3 kids in the middle of the night, while freezing, on a mile round trip hike to pee. What was neat though was that the "wild" javelinas were very domesticated and would wander right up to the campsite. They could even pop open the cooler with their snout. While staying at Ft Davis we went to the Mcdonald's observatory and took a guided tour of the telescopes. It was fun, but the kids were not as interested in it as the adults were.

Their favorite excursion was seeing the mysterious Marfa lights. The lights were really fascinating and just kept appearing every where. They also enjoyed the 3.5 mile hike to the top of a mountain. It was a little treacherous, but no one, thankfully, was seriously injured.....just a few scrapes and bruises. The only place in the whole campsite with cell reception was the top of the mountain so it was kind of funny to watch everyone whip out their phones once they realized they actually had reception. We were, of course, no different. We made sure to check in with our oldest with whom we had entrusted our house and pets to during our absence. Speaking of which, I am still not sure how he managed to get pasta sauce all over my dryer which is not even in the same room as the kitchen, but then again somethings are better left alone. My house is still standing and all the pets are alive, though to be fair if they died it most likely would not be his fault. The cat is about to turn 20 and the 100# dog is 11.
You can't tell, but this turret is actually on a mountain top. |
New Mexico campsite, yes it really was this desolate. |

We went to Carlsbad next and the cave is HUGE, not to mention steep. We also went to the Living Desert museum. That was a lot of fun, too. However, we went there on the same day as the cave and by the end of the day we had walked about 6 miles up and down mountains and we were all so sore we couldn't almost get to the truck to head back to camp. New Mexico is also very dusty. Our allergies went crazy and even the shoes we were wearing had a layer of dust on them at the end of the day. I can only imagine all the junk we breathed in. We were most definitely tired on the long drive home, but it was well worth it and we had a good trip.
