We have been so busy this summer! Our local school district starts back to school on August 4th. I haven't decided if T will go back to school then or August 18th. We usually start back the first Monday in August, but we might take one last trip before everything gets going in the fall. I cannot believe this is his last year of school and my last year of homeschooling. I wasn't sure we would do it all the way through. There were a few times I almost decided to give up, but we stuck with it and I wouldn't go back and change anything for the world. I had the opportunity to spend so much time with all my kids as they grew and changed. I would have missed so much if I hadn't homeschooled them. It definitely wasn't easy, on any of us, but it was so worth it. The memories of all our experiences together is a blessing. The comradery they had with each other growing up is what every parent dreams of. They were peas in a pod. I will miss them greatly as they go off and live their lives, but wow what a great time we had. I hope they are as fulfilled with their families whenever they have them.
T and I have finally powered through about 60 cantaloupe in the last 3 weeks. We are down to the last 2 in the fridge. I do have more blooms, but I would be surprised if we had any more. Cantaloupe don't like it when it gets super hot. We have about 10 watermelon left and then I think they're done too. My tomatoes however are going crazy, which is weird since I usually can't grow tomatoes. This year I moved them to my smaller bed in the front yard and they have loved it there. Ironically, we don't really eat tomatoes. I use them to make marinara sauce, which since I also grow onions, basil, and oregano is so fresh and yummy!
A has been mentoring a vet tech student recently in, of all things, large animals. She doesn't like working with large animals so that was surprising, but she has been not only helping her at work, but bringing her here to practice on poor Iris. Actually, Iris is doing amazingly well as her guinea pig. As long as she gets a few treats, she plays for hours, even lets them run an iv. She is so calm and chill in her old age. It's been 2 years since she was nearly euthanized, but age is catching up with her. Her leg is starting to turn inward and it's just a matter of time before we have to put her down. She doesn't walk well anymore, but she is seriously old for a horse so until she acts like she is in pain or goes down, we'll let her do her thing. She even did some old lady bucks a couple of weeks ago when she didn't get her way so she's still feeling pretty good. She has a DNR on her though. There will be no life saving measures taken. Gwenie will be so sad when she is gone. We're not sure what we will do with Gwenie after Iris dies. Donkeys need a buddy so we'll either get another mini or give her to a neighbor.
I hope everyone is being careful in this heat and have a great rest of your summer!
